Stop living in the past! People will often say this in an attempt to provide encouraging advice about moving on with your life. It sounds easy, but is it?

Although it sounds easy enough, it can be very difficult, especially if there are deep-seated reasons behind living in the past. Significant past experiences and memories, such as the death of a loved one, a painful breakup, traumatic childhood, etc., can be contributing factors as to why you can’t simply and easily move on with life.

Possibly though, you may be holding on to things that are no longer relevant. If you can’t let go of the past, you won’t be able to fully appreciate the beauty of the present or create a brighter future.

From a health perspective, holding onto the past can result in depression. When you don’t let go of the hurt, you may find it challenging to function in the present, suppressing you from moving forward.

Growth begins when you step out of your comfort zone. You will then see more doors of opportunity opening before your eyes. These hidden opportunities cannot be seen until the effort is made. Often, they are not even recognized at the time and are only appreciated through reflection.

While we all need to feel calm and safe, we also need to break free and try new things. Otherwise, there is no growth, only stagnation. You will increase productivity and achievement when you step outside your comfortable place.

When you stay in your safe cocoon, you fail to feel the excitement of doing new things, so you fall back to just performing at baseline. Just enough to where it ‘gets the job done,’ but no more.

When you push yourself beyond your comfort zone, you activate that sense of urgency one feels when beating deadlines and expectations. You get more done in less time, and you find smarter ways to do your tasks.
